Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan

Purpose: The Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Dashboard Analysts will provide effective visualizations and dashboards to those working in the SUD space to aid in decision-making. This lead analyst would lead dashboard design, development, and maintenance with support from the Opioids and Emerging Drugs (OED) Unit and monitor dashboards for trends and insights to be reported to leadership. This position will be housed in the MDHHS Opioids and Emerging Drugs (OED) Unit, within the Division of Environmental Health under the Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health in Lansing.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the design, development, and ongoing maintenance of Power BI dashboards for SUD-related data.
  • Serve as project manager for the dashboard team, leading the organization, development, and creation of any project management documentation.
  • Lead the collection of data from across the department to be included in each dashboard solution.
  • Play a lead role in dashboard strategic planning, this role will be leading a series of dashboards, displaying data from across the department, meeting the needs of many user types.
  • Represent the dashboard team in 1:1s with OED unit manager.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to develop novel ways of visualizing the findings of business data.
  • Lead data quality checks to ensure the validity and cleanliness of datasets prior to their use in analysis and reporting.
  • Collaborate with the OED Unit to ensure dashboards meet specific needs and user requirements.
  • Provide technical and administrative assistance to areas for updating and maintaining existing dashboards.
  • Lead the development of Power BI connections with external source applications.
  • Develop clear and concise visualizations that effectively communicate complex data about SUD trends, demographics, and other relevant factors.
  • Monitor SUD-related data dashboards for emerging trends, insights, and potential areas of concern.
  • Analyze underlying data to identify key drivers and patterns behind observed trends.
  • Prepare reports for leadership teams, summarizing key findings and recommendations based on data analysis.
  • Collaborate with the OED Unit and other relevant program areas and teams to ensure data accuracy and consistency across data reporting approaches.
  • Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
  • Conduct other duties as required.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a relevant area.

Experience: Three years of professional experience. A minimum of 1 year of experience in Power BI dashboard development and management, especially with large datasets, is highly preferred.

Important Skills and Characteristics:

  • Power BI dashboard development and maintenance experience, analytic and data presentation skills, and ability to manage detailed tasks.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Remote work environment as discussed with Supervisor.

Responsibility for the Work of Others: Occasional Leader. Serves as the point person for the OED dashboard team, provides leadership and guidance for two OED analysts.

Impact on Projects, Services and Operations: This role directly supports the MDHHS's drug overdose surveillance activities by developing and maintaining informative Power BI dashboards. This involves working with the State Epidemiology Outcomes Workgroup, the Opioid Policy Team, and the Bureau of Infectious Disease. The purpose is to develop a coordinated system that provides accurate, timely, and useful data on drug overdose to key stakeholders, policymakers, MDHHS, researchers, local programs, and other interested parties. Drug overdose data will be provided in a way that helps partners inform state- and community-level programming and interventions, and evaluate the impact of state, local and organizational policy changes on drug overdoses.
