Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Following established procedure, obtains blood specimens for clinical laboratory analysis from the outreach population served by the Sparrow Health Care System. Evaluates and prepares blood and body fluid specimens for analysis and performs moderately complex testing procedures as directed. Prepares specimens for delivery to the various clinical areas of the laboratory. Efficiently perform all computer functions necessary to process all patient information including accurate billing.

  • Demonstrates a positive, professional image when interacting with patients and staff. Responds to customer needs to meet their expectations.

  • Maintains organized and efficient office operations; orders supplies as needed.

  • Presents a neat and professional appearance compliant with structured dress code.

  • Follows quality control policies and procedures for equipment use and maintenance, including complete and accurate documentation of proper equipment function and maintenance.

  • Attends all required annual review sessions and completes all competency testing.

  • Verifies patient identity and performs phlebotomy services accurately and efficiently.

  • Performs venipunctures, arterial punctures, Micro collection techniques (i.e., finger and heel punctures) and other sample (blood and non blood) collection procedures according to approved policies and procedures.

  • Monitors proper collection of specimens for medical drug testing. Ensures appropriate chain of custody is maintained when necessary.

  • Preparation of containers for 24 hour urine collections. Prepares nasal smears.

  • Adheres to the infection control procedures for blood borne pathogens.

  • Prioritizes the workload for STAT and ROUTINE blood collection. Accurately and appropriately processes specimens for transport to main laboratory for testing.

  • Evaluates problems cautiously, considers alternatives, and selects appropriate course of action; refers questions to site leader or supervisor as needed.

  • Performs computer functions necessary to verify and enter patient billing information and assigns patient number. Operates computer terminal to retrieve patient test data.

  • Orders and verifies laboratory procedures via computer as indicated by physician. Contact physicians, medical technologist, supervisor or laboratory administrator with questions on testing or testing protocols.

  • Monitors and operates a multi-line telephone system, directing inquiries to appropriate personnel, taking messages and answering inquiries. Regularly initiate contacts to obtain and/or relay information.

  • Communicates any concerns or problems related to the Corporate Compliance Policies to the appropriate supervisory personnel or the Compliance Office.

  • Assist in training with extern phlebotomy students from LCC, Ross, Baker & CACC or other contracted companies as needed or directed by site leader.

  • Must be able to work in an uncontrolled climate, interior and exterior environment.

Work Experience * See education requirements
Education * High school diploma or GED * Successful completion of a formal phlebotomy education program/course OR Medical Assistant Program OR one-year experience as a phlebotomist OR completion of the Sparrow Laboratory Phlebotomy Trainee Program
Specialized Knowledge and Skills * Ability to read, follow directions and perform procedures associated with specimen collection, handling and processing. * Ability to utilize recalled knowledge to interpret or apply verbal, numeric or visual data. * Ability to communicate, both written and verbal, with patient, laboratory staff and other professional staff to complete workload. * Exemplary attendance documented by previous employers. * Works well with little or no direct supervision * Phlebotomy externship or previous phlebotomy experience. Preferred. * Previous experience with Laboratory test terminology. Preferred.
