Our team envisions, strategizes, and executes various communications plans to support outreach and advocacy efforts that will improve the lives of people as they age and help build a better tomorrow for future generations. This paid internship has an anticipated start date of early May 2024, with the possibility of extending additional semesters.


Responsibilities

  • Support the strategic development and implementation of AARP Michigan's integrated communications strategies to help promote policy issues on family caregiving, health and welfare, and retirement security
  • Engage in communications tactics to advance these issues and the events organized as part of these efforts
  • Research policy issues, draft documents to support our advocacy efforts, participate in team meetings and strategy discussions, collaborate in communications tactics, and engage in a support role for various remote and in-person events
  • Proactively pursue opportunities to engage the public on AARP priority issues, using creativity and emerging technology platforms -through compelling writing, media pitching, creative videography, and strategic social media -- to effectively tell the story of AARP in Michigan to diverse audiences (i.e., Hispanic/Latino, African American/Black, Asian American Pacific Islander and LGBTQ audiences)
  • Use data-driven analytics and AARP tools to target communications efforts and track results effectively
  • Support State staff and volunteers with the execution of events, virtual meetings, written and oral communications, social media, and other skills necessary to engage Michigan residents and stakeholders effectively

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college/university rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship or must have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program
  • Must be a self-starter and adaptable, with the ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, anticipate project needs, and discern work priorities
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations, including gender, race, and sexual orientation
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, Canva & Zoom
  • Exceptional verbal/written communication skills
  • Familiarity with creating and editing videos and knowledge of multiple social media platforms is a plus

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
