Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Evaluates and treats speech and language pathologies in an impatient and \ or outpatient setting providing professional speech language pathology services for the care and treatment of patients. The SLP evaluates and administers treatments to patients experiencing speech/language, language-based cognition, and/or swallowing difficulties to maximize patient's communication and/or swallowing abilities. The SLP promotes the health and well-being of the people we serve.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Completes initial speech therapy evaluation and develops a treatment plan of care for assigned patients.
  • Provides Speech therapy treatment after analyzing patient information to determine the needs and problems appropriate for speech and language pathologies.
  • Documents patient treatments, initial evaluation, progress notes and discharge summaries in a timely manner in accordance with hospital policies and insurance requirements.
  • Performs speech therapy re-evaluations to assess patient progress; recommends changes to the treatment plan of care as appropriate.
  • Prepares and adapts instructional material and therapy aids.
  • Assists in scheduling patient treatments\appointments along with referring patients to other hospital services.
  • Attends staff meetings and in-service programs as required.
  • Communicates regularly with physicians, interdisciplinary team members, patient families, insurance companies and other regarding patient's treatment and progress.
  • Supports and serves as a role model for our mission, vision, values and customer service initiatives. Adheres to organization's policies and procedures, and compliance guidelines.
  • Lead or direct the activities of Rehab Aides, students and volunteers. Ensuring that department policies and procedures are upheld and that quality patient care is provided.
  • Participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of quality improvement activities within department, health system and/or community.
  • Compliance with Infection Control Standards, including Standard/Universal Precautions, Hand Hygiene and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Assist in maintaining therapy equipment and cleaning treatment areas; orders supplies as necessary to ensure environmental safety.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
General Requirements * Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech/Language Pathology from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association or eligible for clinical fellowship year. * Licensed in the State of Michigan * BLS certification
Work Experience * Clinical experience treating Adult and Pediatric patients preferred * Experience with voice disorders preferred * Previous Experience with adult patients in videofluroscopic swallow studies preferred
Education * Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited program in Speech/ Language Pathology.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills * Basic clinical skills providing speech/language pathology services. * Willingness to be training in additional evaluations/ treatments based on needs of clinic and community * Effective written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. * Ability to perform multiple tasks and adapt to changing work situations. * Ability to type to complete EMR documentation in a timely manner. * Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients serviced in her/his assigned service area as related to the principle duties and responsibilities of the position. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training and experience.
